Since President Bush announced an agenda for weaning the country from dependency on foreign oil, new ethanol plants have been popping up across the nation.

Ethanol demand is rising. If you fuel your car in the U.S., you are putting ethanol in your gas tank because regular gasoline now contains at least 10 percent ethanol. And many gas stations are replacing their mid-grade gasoline with E85, which is 85 percent ethanol.

The strategy seems to be working. According to Bob Dinneen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association, the U.S. has already reduced its fuel consumption considerably.

The increased use of ethanol is good news in terms of energy independence and environmental friendliness. However, its use can form acids and lead to oxidation of internal engine parts if you do not use the right motor oil.

Lubrilon, a specialty automotive oil, was specifically formulated for use with all ethanol-blended fuels. Lubrilon multi-viscosity motor oils are SAE and API licensed for use in all gasoline engines, and are engineered to help combat the acids formed when burning any modern ethanol fuel blend, including gasoline and E85.

With gas prices seemingly out of control its more important than ever to learn how to improve gas mileage in your vehicles.

There are many simple steps you can take that are free or low cost that at first glance seem silly or even obvious but you would be surprised how many people fail to do them or ignore the warning signs their car is giving them.

Here are some quick tips that you may have missed or forgotten about. Not any single tip will make that big of a difference in increasing your gas mileage but I am a firm believer that every little thing you can do really does add up to getting better gas mileage and helping the environment in the process.

Simple Mileage Improvement Tips:

Use a sunshade to keep your car cool and avoid the use of your air conditioner as much as possible.

Park your car in the shade when it’s sunny and warm to keep your cars interior cooler.

Make sure that your parking brake is fully released before you start driving.

Avoid drive-thru lines at restaurants. Park your car and go inside and order your food as many times its a lot quicker anyway. I always laugh to myself as Im eating while I watch people sitting in their cars still waiting for their food. Just think of how much gas is wasted in those lines!

Use a block heater in winter to pre-warm your car engine.

Don’t ride the brake. Not only will this save gas but will greatly extend the life of your brake pads.

Drive with a smooth, constant speed and avoid flooring it when the stoplight turns green.

Maintain the transmission fluid in your car at the proper level for efficient gear shifting.

If there is smoke is coming from your tailpipe make sure that you make an appointment with your mechanic.

Make sure that your cooling system thermostat in your car is working properly.

Avoid air conditioning leaks by constant checkups with your mechanic. FYI – Pre-1994 vehicles use CFCs for cooling.

Immediately fix a slipping transmission.

When you rev up your vehicle’s engine it wastes gas. Avoid revving your engine before your turn it off as it really serves no purpose.

If you cant find a place to buy cheap gas on one day wait if you can until a few days later since the price of gas is constantly changing. Where I live you can almost predict which days prices will rise or fall. Start watching prices in your area to see if you can pick up on any patterns.

Buy your gas at the wholesale clubs, like Costco. You can often save over 10 cents a gallon or more. If you don’t like the wholesale clubs get a gas credit card from a major oil company. You’ll get a 1% to 5% discount when you buy your gas at their stations.

Show Me Tell Me: The New Technical Checks of the Irish Driving Test.

The latest round of changes to the Irish Driving Test were implemented on, Feb.14th 2005, as part of a chain of E.U.Directives.

Test Candidates are now required to have a basic level of mechanical knowledge, which any good professional School of Motoring would have been teaching from day one in any event.

The car of today is a very different beast compared with its grandparents and any driver, young or old, should have a range of skills that enable them to identify problems and take the necessary remedial action.

The Driving Examiner will select three questions at random from a list of technical aspects which will include opening the bonnet. While it is not exactly space technology, the ability to identify this range of equipment and to describe how individual checks would be performed, does require some thought and a little practise. Some of the equipment will have accompanying warning lights on the instrument panel some does not, so some of the requirements will already be known (hopefully!)

Candidates will be asked to explain how they would perform checks on three out of the following list:-
Engine Oil: Coolant: Steering: Brakes: Horn: Indicators: Lights: Tyres: Reflectors: Windscreen washer.

The under the Bonnet checks relate to:-Power Steering Fluid; Brake Fluid; Engine Oil; Engine Coolant; and Windscreen washer Fluid. In a newer car all of these pieces of equipment are easily identifiable by coloured tops to the various reservoirs, which have an easily recognisable icon painted or etched into them. The location of these five essential items does vary a little from model to model so if you have changed your car in the lead up to the Driving Test then spend a few minutes double checking.

In the event of very bad weather (rarely a feature of the Irish climate) it is unlikely that the Examiner will ask for the bonnet to be opened but since he or she has already spent time outside the car, checking brake lights and indicators and paperwork, its not impossible. If he or she is a fisherman or a boating enthusiast then a few drops of rain will be water off a ducks back. Just keep an eye on the weather and ensure that your heater or demist controls are pre-set .Two persons in the car during rainy weather will mist up the windows extremely quickly and the candidate needs to be equally deft with the controls.

Questions on brakes will cover both the footbrake and handbrake, and on steering will deal with cars that both have power steering and those that dont .Of course there are still a few older cars out there without P.A.S. Its worth adding to the list , one more item of importance to the Driverthat of the Alternator and its drive belt .The fact that all the above need to be demonstrated on the Driving Test should not detract from the need to perform these checks on a regular weekly basis. It is precisely because of the importance of all these pieces of equipment and their monitoring, that it was deemed essential to include them in the scope of the Driving Test.

Here is the oil filler cap and to check the oil level I would first withdraw the Oil Dip Stick, wipe it clean and then replace it momentarily. I would then withdraw the dip stick again and ensure that the level of oil showing was between the minimum and maximum marks on the base of the dip stick, preferably nearer the maximum mark. In the event of the oil level being lower than the half way mark I would top up to the maximum levelCandidate

This latter sentence has been put in for good measure since its not much good knowing how you would check the oil if you didnt then follow through on the result!

Enter all your available vehicle features and mileage to obtain an accurate number. Take a printout of the page. Now you have all the details of your car at your finger tips and the estimated market value the sellers in your region are willing to pay from a private party sale.

Call your local news paper and buy a classified ads in automotive section for one week starting from a Sunday. Some local papers will extend your ad for an additional week for a nominal charge or for free if the vehicle is not sold in one week. Give details like make, model, year, mileage, engine cylinder size, etc. Also check out the online car selling sites like motor zoo.com and car.com. Get the title of your car and keep it in a place you can access it quickly if a prospective buyer wants to buy the car immediately.

Take your car to the nearest car wash and give it a through cleaning, both interior and exterior. Remove every thing from the trunk, back seats, and floor. The car should only have floor mats on the floor. Trunk should be completely empty. Secure the spare tire and the jack appropriately. Vacuum the trunk. Use a spot remover to remove spots from seats and trunk carpet if it is possible. Dont spend money fixing the car for any mechanical and electrical repairs, unless it is very minor like replacing the fuse or a bulb etc.. Be honest to the buyer if you have any mechanical or electrical problems with your car. Take the car to a quick oil change place for oil change and topping of other fluids. Most quick oil places will also fill up your anti-freeze, transmission fluids, power steering fluid if you go for their 20, 21 or whatever point inspection. They will also inflate your tires pressure to the recommended level.

When prospective buyers call you, answer all questions they might have about your vehicle. Answer them honestly because you want to turn an appointment into a sale. Make appointment at a specific time. dont be vague like come after work, because your after work and the buyers after work may not be the same. Ask the buyer to come during the day and not at night. This may be a problem during the week-days in Winter months when days are shorter but in the Summer it should not be a problem. You can also schedule your appointment during the week-ends in the Winter months. Get the cell phone number of the prospective buyer if it is possible. However, dont get upset if the prospective buyer does not show up or shows up late. Remember that a prospective buyer is your customer and customer is always right.

Before the buyer takes the car for a test drive, check hisher drivers license. You should accompany the buyer during the test drive and direct the buyer to roads you are familiar with. Dont allow himher to take the car wherever heshe wants. During price negotiation, dont be extremely rigid in your price. Depending on the resale value of your car, you should be able to accept a couple of hundred pounds less than your advertised price. Take only cash; do not take checks or registered checks.

If you receive any inquires from prospective buyers to your online advertisement, be very cautious. There are lots of scams going on online. If the online buyer proposes to send you a registered check for more than what you are asking for and tells you to send the difference to a shipping company, than you know it is definitely a scam. Sell Your Car Online: Step 1, Taking High Quality Pictures of Your Automobile

Placing your car or truck for sale in an auto classifieds website is a great way to reach tons of potential buyers. But constructing a great ad is not childs play. To generate a lot of interest in your vehicle, you must know how to create the perfect online listing. The necessary steps are outlined in five articles titled Sell Your Car Online.

The first step in placing a great ad is taking pictures of the car or truck that is for sale. You dont just want to take any picture and post it on the internet. You want to post the best picture you possibly can. After all, the potential buyers that view your online listing want to see a picture that tells them something more than just the color of the vehicle. A good picture can convey the overall condition of the body, paint, interior, and more. A good, or near professional-quality, picture can seal the deal in the buyers mind.

Hypothetical situation: A potential car buyer is looking for a particular car. The buyer has found two nearly identical cars, one belongs to you and one belongs to someone in a nearby state. These two cars have the same body style, the same engine and transmission, the same color, the same options, and very close to the same price. The only deciding factor is the pictures. The competing car has one low quality picture. It is half blocked by a neighboring vehicle. The sun is in the background causing a glare that obscures the color and overall appearance of the car. Your car, on the other hand, has multiple pictures from different angles. There is no sun to cause a glare and no rain to make the picture look dreary. The true color of the car shows and there is nothing blocking the view. Which car do you think the buyer would choose? Pictures of competing cars can, without a doubt, influence the potential buyer to purchase one car over another.

There are things you must consider before you take the first picture. What type of camera should I use? How many pictures should I take? What exactly should I take pictures of? Should I take the pictures in direct sunlight? Unless you are a professional photographer, or at least an experienced one, you may not know the correct answer to these questions.

What type of camera should I use? Since the pictures you upload to the internet must be in digital format, a digital camera is the best type of camera to use. If you use a non-digital camera, you first have to pay to get the film developed. Then use a scanner to digitize it. You must spend valuable time and money to do this. Using a digital camera is the most cost efficient and time conserving way to take and upload photos of your vehicle. In most cases, all you have to do is connect your camera to your computer to download the photos to the hard drive. Then youre ready to post your ad.

What size mega pixel (MP) camera do I need? This depends on what you will be doing with the pictures. If you need large, high quality pictures, like 8X10 prints or a large display photo in the newspaper, you may need to purchase a 5 MP camera or better. If you will be printing the pictures for personal use or posting small photos in print ads in the local newspaper, you probably need a 3 MP camera or better. If all you need is camera to take pictures to be uploaded to the internet, a 2 MP camera should do the trick.

Remember this! If the picture you are taking will only be used on the internet, use the lowest quality setting that your camera has. Some cameras even have a setting for internet quality photos.

How many pictures should I take? There is no correct answer for this question. Just take as many as you need. A good photographer will take pictures from multiple angles as well as take duplicate pictures from each angle. If you have 20 pictures to choose from, you can easily find at least 5 high quality photos to post with your listing that show lots of detail about your vehicle. Then you can delete the unused photos so youre not wasting space on your hard drive.

What exactly should I take pictures of? You need pictures from opposite angles that show the exterior of the vehicle. Pictures should be taken of the engine compartment with the hood raised. More pictures should be taken of the interior. If your vehicle has expensive aftermarket accessories, take pictures of them. For example, take close ups of expensive mag wheels, custom artwork or painting, or a high-tech audio system. In essence, you want to convey the overall condition of the vehicle and any special features the vehicle may have with the pictures you take.

Where should I take the pictures? You need to take pictures of the vehicle in a place that has as little background detail as possible. For example, you dont want another car, a highly trafficked street, or a person in the picture at all. The best place to take the pictures would be near a plain brick wall, or in front of an empty field. You dont want any object, whether in the foreground or background, to distract the buyer from seeing the details of your vehicle.

Should I take the pictures in direct sunlight? In order to take a great picture with a mid- to low-quality digital camera, you need plenty of light. But too much direct sunlight can cause bright glares and dark shadows, neither of which is good. The absolute best time to take pictures of your vehicle is on a partly cloudy day when the sun is behind the clouds. This eliminates the harsh, dark shadows even though there is still plenty of light to draw out the true color(s) of the vehicle. If you must take the pictures in direct sunlight, always make sure that the sun is behind you (so it will be shining on the side of the vehicle that is facing you). Try not to take a picture of a vehicle when the side facing you is in the shadow.

If you normally take terrible pictures, remember this! It is much better to take a picture with a wider view that has all the details in it than to try to get a close up and cut part of the important details out. So zoom out to make sure you get a great picture.

The production version of the Nissan GT-R debuted at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show and was launched in the Japanese market December 2007. The U.S. launch is scheduled for June 2008. Europe will be the third market for the GT-R, where it is expected to be launched late 2008. Production will be held to about 1,000 cars per month. Sony PlayStation’s “Gran Turismo (series)”Gran Turismo creators “Polyphony Digital”Polyphony Digital were involved in the development of the Nissan GT-R by designing the performance cars multifunction display. This powerful performance automobile was a legend even before production started, thanks in part to this popular car racing video game.
Underground car racing trials from Japan report that the 2009 Nissan GT-R boasts a 0-60 of 3.5 seconds with the aid of launch control, technological wizardry that Nissan has been keeping secret. It has an 11.7-second quarter mile with a 192 mph top speed; a true performance car. The price, less than 70,000 for the base and Black Edition, makes it a reachable dream for the upper middleclass car racing enthusiast. The larger-displacement 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 produces approximately 450 horsepower; and makes for exciting car racing on drifting videos.
Activation of the Nissan GT-R’s launch control is a matter of configuring the transmission, dynamics control and damping adjustments properly. Then you pin the brake with your left foot and throttle with your right like the technique used to produce burnouts in those monster performance cars of byegone times. The results are somewhat different though. The GT-Rs computer holds the engine at 4,500 rpm waiting for your foot to let off the brake pedal. When you do the GT-R accelerates faster than virtually any production performance car in the world. It is comparable to the Porsche 911 Turbo which hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and blasts through the quarter-mile in 11.6 at 118.5 mph.
Audi S4 Luxury and Performance
Spy photographers spotted the next Audi S4 out for underground testing. Based on the Audi A4 that debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the new S4 promises even more performance than the previous model. While the front bumper remains unchanged a few subtle changes can be seen. Audi’s signature chrome side mirrors found on Audi S models are also absent. Compared to the A4, the new S4 has bigger wheels and brakes, new side skirts and quad-exhaust. Powering the S4 will be a 354 horsepower V8. Mechanically, the S4 is expected to be identical to the S5.The 2008 S4 has a base price of 48,610 which keeps it affordable to the upper middleclass performance enthusiast and it is likely the new S4 will be in the same price range.

It has been reported that the new Audi S4 runs at 11.37 @ 122.43 MPH at the drag strip. Looking more like a luxury car than a racing car, the S4s performance and power are hard to beat. The Audi S4 will use the S5s 4.2-litre FSI V8 engine that delivers 354 Hp (compared to 340 Hp of the current S4s 4.2L V8). Power will be transferred to all wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The new S4 is anticipated to get a slight power boost to keep its rivals including BMW at bay. In usual Audi fashion, the range-topping S-models are equipped with the Quattro four-wheel drive technology.

Saturn Sky: Sneak Peek

Somebody at General Motors must love Saturn. One hundred year old Oldsmobile was killed off in favor of bringing the Saturn brand in-house. Up until the early part of this decade, Saturn was a separate automaker, wholly owned by GM. Now, as a bonafide GM division, the Saturn line is finally getting some much needed new models including the Sky roadster, the focus of this preview.

In the early 1990s, dent resistant polymer cars with the S designation began to roll of a factory line of a new plant located in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Several things were unusual about the project. The first was the company: Saturn. As a wholly owned but separately managed GM company, the Saturn initially escaped GMs often overbearing culture and began to produce cars on its own far removed from Detroit. The second unusual point about the company was the cars itself: compact, import-fighting models designed to withstand the onslaught from Japan of low priced, high quality cars. Available in coupe, sedan, and wagon the cars quickly caught on in part for their engineering as well as for their no hassle, no haggle pricing. The sticker price on the car was the price customers paid, making a visit to the Saturn show room a pleasure and not a chore.

As time has passed, the S series grew old and was replaced by the compact ION series. In addition, a midsized sedan and wagon, the L series, briefly served as the larger car in Saturns extremely limited line up beginning in the late 1990s. The L series, based on an Opel platform, was retired in 2004 and replaced by a 7 passenger crossover vehicle, the RELAY. In addition, Saturn had introduced an SUV, the VUE, which is still in production today.

All of this translates into a limited line up, too limited in fact to compete successfully with other car lines. Enter the Saturn Sky.

The Saturn Sky, much like the already introduced Pontiac Solstice is a two seat roadster. Based on GMs new Delta series platform, the Sky, which will officially make its debut next spring as a 2007 model does something that no other Saturn has ever done: generate excitement.

Similar in size and looks to Hondas S2000 Roadster, the Sky will come equipped with 18 inch alloy wheels, a manually operated soft top, a reverse opening clamshell hood, leather bucket seats, and four wheel anti-locking brakes. Standard engine will be a 2.4 170hp I4 paired with either a 5 speed manual or 5 speed automatic transmission.

Prices for the new Sky should come in at several thousand pounds higher than the Pontiac Solstice as the Sky is targeted and equipped slightly upmarket. MSRP starting around 25 thousand pounds is likely; only 10-12,000 models will be produced annually.

Other models are being planned for Saturn, but the Sky represents a fresh departure from what has long been perceived by many as a staid moniker. Judging by many published reports, the Sky is a step in the right direction and we can only hope that the other new models planned for Saturn generate at least half the hype of the Sky.

Saturn AURA: Turning a Corner

General Motors Saturn division is one of the few bright spots for the troubled U.S. automaker. As of this writing, the parent company is in the midst of plant closings, massive layoffs, and big losses. Bankruptcy may be the ultimate out for GM, but even if the company doesnt choose that route, big changes are coming nevertheless. Fortunately, the Saturn division is one of the few bright spots for the legendary automaker as are Cadillac, GMC, and select models including the Corvette and the companys big trucks. For Saturn, there is a certain AURA about the division both in model name as well as in sensation.

Step back two decades and General Motors is all abuzz over a new car company in the process of being created: Saturn. As a wholly owned subsidiary of GM, Saturn was designed to take on Japanese rivals Toyota and Honda by building compact cars that American drivers really wanted and could rely upon. It worked. For most of the 1990s, the S Series was the sole model for Saturn; available in coupe, sedan, and wagon, the S Series achieved cult status and had a loyal following of owners who regularly congregated for meets at Spring Hill, TN where the cars were built. Even when the vehicles design aged, the S Series maintained its high status with Saturn aficionados.

By the late 1990s, two new lines of vehicles were added to the Saturn brand. The VUE, became the companys sport utility vehicle while the L Series was the first large Saturn. In reality, the L was a midsize car as it was heavily derived from a model sold by GMs European division, Opel. With the latter model, Saturn hoped to provide the larger vehicle that S Series owners desired. Unfortunately, sales figures barely exceeded half of the quota anticipated by Saturn, so after a few years the model was retired.

Today, Saturn is no longer a separate company. With the demise of Oldsmobile, Saturn is now a full fledged division of General Motors. While some see this move as a bad thing, it has resulted in new products for the brand.

Soon after the L Series was retired, the RELAY was introduced. As the first Saturn model built on a U.S. G.M. platform, the 7 passenger people mover was a far cry from previous models. Still, the vehicle has filled a gaping hole in the Saturn line up.

Just this past Spring the SKY was introduced, an upscale limited production convertible. To say that the car has been received with gladness is an understatement. Quite frankly, the SKY is the halo car needed by Saturn, but fortunately the division isnt stopping there.

Although the L Series was a flop, GM is once again turning to its Opel division to produce a car. Combining Opel styling with a U.S. G.M. platform, the AURA sedan will be rolling into a showroom near you very soon.

So, what is so special about the AURA? Its good looks! Although it is nearly impossible to describe the vehicle without showing you a picture, the AURA is simply one imposing car. Although a sedan, the AURA is sporty looking with a grille that is not too far removed from the new SKY. With a 3.6L V6 engine mated to a six speed automatic transmission, the 250 h.p. AURA will definitely compete with the Camry, Accord, and Maxima for sales as well as for performance leadership. Throw in 19 inch wheels, a sporty interior, and responsive handling and the AURA just begs to be driven.

The best part of the AURA is that it isnt the L Series, a car criticized for being too bland and uninspiring. One look at the AURA and you can see that Saturn got it right this time.

Prices for the AURA havent been announced yet, but you can expect fully loaded models to retail below 25,000 well within the range of its competition.

Will the AURA succeed? Well, it has too! Look for Saturn to do all that it can to make sure that the model is marketed to those who would buy one: the cross section of the North American populace. Yes, Saturn has turned a corner and hopefully the same came be said for the entire company.
